LEAVE THE LEAVES

What can you do to improve soil health in your own backyard?

Did you know? Raking your leaves is not actually the best strategy for soil health! Removing yard waste actually destroys the natural habitat for native, beneficial insects (such as ground bees!) and organisms that live in the carpet of dead leaves and break down the leaves, turning them into soil.

Instead of raking up your leaves and fallen sticks, you can use them as mulch around plant beds or under bushes. This reduces the need to buy fertilizer, saving you money, and can also reduce the time spent raking all those leaves! The leaves will slowly decay as mulch and prevent weeds from growing, and additionally, they will turn into natural compost for your yard, eventually turning into nutrient rich soil.

So this autumn, why not leave your leaves? Save money and time by helping the environment in your very own backyard!
